DALLAS LASIK - DR BOOTHE

DALLAS LASIK - DR BOOTHE

The major difference between the two surgeries is the way that the stroma, the middle layer of the cornea, is exposed before it is vaporized with the laser. In PRK, the top layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, is scraped away to expose the stromal layer underneath. In LASIK, a flap is cut in the stromal layer and the flap is folded back.( DR. Dr William Boothe => Abrasion: An abrasion usually occurs when a fingernail or other foreign object rubs across the cornea or conjunctiva and removes some surface tissue. There is a risk of bacterial or fungal contamination and infection following an eye abrasion.

Low Vision - Visual impairment ; usually less than 20/200 which obstructs daily activities but cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. (See 20/20)

Artificial tear drop: Lubricants (also called artificial tears) are synthetic (manmade), water-based solutions that are used to lubricate the eye and thicken tears. Artificial tears are formulated as solutions or suspensions, varying in viscosity. Popular examples of artificial tears include AquaSite, Bion Tears, Celluvisc, Duratears, Gen Teal, HypoTears, Liquifilm Tears, OcuCoat, Refresh, Systane, Tears Naturale, and TheraTears. Many people develop sensitivity to the preservatives in these solutions, causing increasing redness, burning or itching. Most of these products are also available in a preservative-free (PF) form. Artificial tears usually are used two to five times a day as needed for relief of symptoms.

Lens - The crystalline lens, inside the eye, which refracts (bends) light rays as they pass through the eye to the retina. It’s fully transparent and is convex on both sides (curves outwards). It’s located between the iris, the colored part of the eye, and the vitreous humor, the fluid which fills the main part of the eye’s interior. It’s the second part of the eye to refract light rays, the first being the cornea, which does about 65% of the refraction necessary for clear vision. The lens can change its shape to accommodate light rays coming from near or far distances, and these changes in shape are controlled by tiny muscles attached to each end of the lens.

As the optic nerve becomes more damaged, blank spots begin to appear in your field of vision. You typically won't notice these blank spots in your day-to-day activities until the optic nerve is significantly damaged and these spots become large. If all the optic nerve fibers die, blindness results.( DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE - DALLAS)

LASIK DALLAS - Dr William Boothe => Uveitis: Uveitis is an inflammation of the eye structures in the uveal tract (the iris and other structures within the eye to which the iris attaches). Uveitis may occur without an obvious cause or may be due to trauma or an inflammatory disease in other parts of the body. Symptoms and signs of uveitis include eye pain, tearing, light sensitivity, and visual blurring.

Astigmatism - (uh-STIG-muh-tiz-um) An eye condition where the cornea is oval-shaped rather than round. This oval shape has two curves: the steeper one and the flatter one. Each curve refracts light at a different angle, sending it to focus on the retina in two different places, and creating distorted vision. It can be mild, with just blurriness, or more severe, with ghosting and severe blurring. In a glasses prescription, the second number expresses the degree of astigmatism you have, and the next number is the number of degrees in the angle of refraction. For example, a prescription of –4.00 – 2.00x34o states that you have 2 diopters of astigmatism at an angle of 34 degrees

Certain types of "wet" macular degeneration can be treated with laser surgery, a brief outpatient procedure that uses a focused beam of light to slow or stop leaking blood vessels that damage the macula. A treatment called photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses a combination of a special drug and laser treatment to slow or stop leaking blood vessels.( DR BOOTHE - LASIK DALLAS)

Wavelength - The distance between the top of one wave and the top of the next. Used of light waves. Specific wavelengths equate to specific colors. The excimer laser used in LASIK procedures is 193 nm in wavelength, which is an ultraviolet light (beyond the violet area, and therefore invisible to our eyes).

Blepharitis: Blepharitis is a common condition that is caused by inflammation of the eyelid. It results in red, scaly, and thickened eyelids and typically some loss of the eyelashes. Blepharitis may be due to either Staphylococcus epidermidis or Staphylococcus aureus (types of bacteria), seborrheic dermatitis (a type of skin inflammation of unknown cause), or a mixture of the two. It is sometimes associated with rosacea of the face. The most common complaints are itching, flaking of the lids, and burning. Blepharitis is initially treated by applying hot compresses to the affected eye, followed by an eyelid scrub. If the condition persists, you should see the doctor, who may prescribe antibiotics.

Eye Motility Exam - An eye motility exam is performed on patients to examine if their eye's muscles or nerve supply have any problems. Having the patient focus on a target like the doctor's finger, while they move it in a large "H" is usually how this exam is performed.( LASIK DALLAS - DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE)

Dr William A. Boothe => Nasolacrimal duct obstruction - (NAY-zo-LAK-ruh-muhl) The nasolacrimal ducts are the tear ducts which carry tears out of the eyes to the nose. They can become clogged, usually in a child, so that the tears build up within the eyes and overflow. If not treated it can lead to infection. See also punctum, punctal plugs, and lacrimal gland.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) - Deterioration, as people age, of the macula lutea (also called the yellow spot), which is a small area on the retina which gives maximum vision. If left untreated, it results in blindness
